Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)
On September 4, 2003, President George W. Bush signed the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003 (P.L. 108-79) into law. The goal of PREA is to eliminate sexual abuse and sexual harassment in all confinement facilities across the United States.
PREA applies to adult prisons and jails, juvenile facilities, community corrections, lockups, and tribal detention centers. The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) continues to support state, local, and tribal agencies through funding, training, and resources to ensure compliance with PREA standards and to protect the safety and dignity of those in custody.
For more information, please review our Sexual Abuse and Assault Prevention and Intervention Program Policy (PDF).
